• In the fall of 2001, the Department of the Environment and Local Government released the document ‘Waste Reduction & Diversion – An Action Plan for New Brunswick’. In order to ensure province-wide consistency, the province established standards for solid waste commissions, summarized as follows:
• Each Regional Solid Waste Commission was required to implement region-wide recycling programs for:
• Corrugated cardboard, newsprint, box board and office paper by Dec. 31, 2003 • High and low density polyethylene plastics (#1 and 2) by Dec. 31, 2004 • Composting of all organic waste by Dec. 31, 2006
• Each Regional Solid Waste commission developes a Waste Reduction and Diversion Plan to be submitted to the Minister of the Environment and Local Government for review and approval. The plan must:
• Provide for region-wide programs • Have provision for disposal of household hazardous wastes • Include a public awareness and education strategy
