Waste Reduction & Diversion, An Action Plan for New Brunswick
The Province of New Brunswick has set waste diversion standards for the solid waste commissions.

In the fall of 2001, the Department of the
Environment and Local Government released
the document ‘Waste Reduction & Diversion –
An Action Plan for New Brunswick
’. In order to
ensure province-wide consistency, the province established standards for solid waste
commissions, summarized as follows:

• Each Regional Solid Waste Commission was
required to implement region-wide recycling
programs for:

     • Corrugated cardboard, newsprint, box
board and office paper by Dec. 31, 2003
     • High and low density polyethylene plastics
       (#1 and 2) by Dec. 31, 2004
     • Composting of all organic waste by
       Dec. 31, 2006

• Each Regional Solid Waste commission developes a Waste Reduction and Diversion Plan to be submitted to the Minister of the Environment and Local Government for review and approval. The plan must:

     • Provide for region-wide programs
     • Have provision for disposal of household hazardous wastes
     • Include a public awareness and education strategy
